The archeological site of Malia is located at a distance of 36 km east of Heraklion and 2 km on the east of the city of Malia. Excavations begun by Mr. I. Hatzidakis and the French Archeological School and continued from 1913 onwards. The site covers approximately 55 hectares and was inhabited from 4200 b.C to 1200 b.C.

The site is comprised by a Minoan palace with a lot of storage grounds, a city organized in building blocks of 2-4 houses with vertical paved roads, cemeteries and sanctuaries. The most important finds are on display in the Archeological Museum of Heraklion: The Malia Bee Pendant, the Minoan scepter, shaped like a leopard’s head in the front and like a double axe in the back and the Acrobat on a roundel at the base of a sword.
