The Maritime museum was inaugurated in 1973 in a section of the Firka Venetian fortress on the northwest outskirts of the old town of Chania. A group of Greek naval officers, taking initiative, founded, organized and supervised the exhibition with the view to displaying and preserving the Greek naval heritage.

The sea vessel evolution is presented (through meticulous scale-modeling) tracing the historic development from the Minoan to the Classical years. What’s more on display, the Byzantine peak, the Ottoman dominance period, WWII, along with the post war years.

The exhibition comprises a wide array of vessels ranging from ordinary fishing boats to the most significant war vessels of their time. The battle of Crete is in focus on the second floor. The reconstruction of the Minoan ship was initiated by the Chania Maritime Museum; nowadays, it is on show in the Moro dockyard, an in-between stop of the Olympic flame 2004.

Crete had ‘called’ to me yet again after my recent autumnal visit and when we arrived to spring sunshine and warmth, the blossom on trees and the calls of birdsong and the buzz of the bees it was a superb feeling.
