This program combines a visit to the ancient Greek city of Lato with a hike of the Kritsa Gorge. One of the most important Doric cities on the island, the ruins of fortified Lato date to the 5th and 4th centuries BC and occupies an exquisitely defensible position overlooking Mirabello Bay. A double acropolis adorns the site; the remains of a prytaneion, a cistern, a temple, and a theater are easily identified. The port city of Lato was Kamara, located near modern Aghios Nikolaos.
The hike of Kritsa Gorge (long version 10 kms; short version 5-7 kms) is quite spectacular. The gorge runs in a circle: its narrowest part is only 90 centimeters wide. Turkish kalderimi trails point the way. After our hike we will stop for a coffee-break in the village of Kritsa, a center of textiles and crafts in Eastern Crete.
